Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill to Open March 8 at WinStar World Casino

Superstar Toby Keith will open his famed restaurant and entertainment venue, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill, at WinStar World Casino at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2010. The restaurant is located at 777 Casino Way, Suite 1 in Thackerville, Okla.

Named after the singer/songwriter’s hit single “I Love This Bar,” the 16,000 square-foot restaurant will serve as an entertainment venue featuring live music and dancing and will feature home-cooked Southern-style fare. The restaurant will have 16 HDTV monitors and two big screens for viewing sporting events, more than 100 pieces of Keith memorabilia, a custom motorcycle and also adorning the walls is half of the Ford truck driven by Keith in the movie, “Beer For My Horses.”

WinStar World Casino is an economic enterprise of the Chickasaw Nation, and Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby looks forward to the addition of the restaurant.

The restaurant seats 300 customers and is equipped one VIP room that seats up to 75. The restaurant will provide jobs for more than 175 people, 85 percent of which reside in Texas.

Guests will enjoy live music with no cover on Friday and Saturday nights from the best in high-energy national and local bands and entertainers. The following have been scheduled during the first few months of opening – Dallas-based bands Red River Mudcats and Southern Drive, Scotty Thurman and the Perfect Trouble Band from Gainesville, Roanoke-native Cody Jinks and other local musical talent.

The menu includes many of the home-style Southern dishes the ex-oil field worker calls his favorites: chicken-fried steak, meatloaf, Freedom Fries, fried-bologna sandwiches and ribs and chicken.

Another important menu feature is the American Soldier Special, a nod to Keith’s well-known patriotism and USO trips to entertain troops in the Middle East. A cheeseburger, Freedom Fries and a drink is served free of charge to any military personnel with valid military ID.

The WinStar location will be the sixth restaurant and bar for Keith. Hours of operation are Sunday-Thursday 11 a.m.-10 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11 – 1:30 a.m.

National Association of Basketball Coaches Launches Talk Radio Show with Debut of ‘The College Basketball Experience’ on the VoiceAmerica Network March 14, 2007

Jim Haney, the Executive Director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches launches a new internet talk radio show which allows listeners to participate in active, open discussions on current topics in college basketball. Haney’s debut show, “March Madness – Breaking Down the Bracket” will break down the NCAA tournament brackets with special guest, Jim Larranaga, head coach at George Mason University (GMU). Wooden, now 96 years young, is one of only three players elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and coach. He was the National Player of the Year at Purdue in 1932, leading the Boilermakers to the national championship. Wooden coached at UCLA from 1948-75 with an overall record of 620-147. He led UCLA to 10 NCAA championships, including seven straight from 1966-73. He was a six-time national coach of the year. Wooden’s Bruins had four 30-0 seasons, won 88 consecutive games, 38 straight NCAA tournament victories and won 19 PAC-10 championships. In 40 years of coaching, his teams had an overall won-lost record of 885-203 for a winning percentage of .813. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player in 1961 and as a coach in 1973. Wooden was a member of the founding class inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. The series will continue in each of the next two weeks.

As March Madness Grows, Book Looks at ‘Crooked Zebra’

Many die-hard basketball fans across the country feel college hoops offer a more genuine interpretation of the game than the NBA. According to veteran coach and author Bob Weltlich, that purity can easily be corrupted and it could be the men making the calls that taint it. His new novel, Crooked Zebra (now available through AuthorHouse), examines the effects of gambling on the game.

The novel tells the story of people linked in a scheme to fix college basketball games. Narrated by Jim Stanton, Crooked Zebra follows Bob Girard, a former college basketball player turned father, referee and mentor. He and his wife run a popular basketball camp for children in South Florida, and their lives are in for a change when 11-year-old Chad Payne sneaks into the camp. Instead of ignoring or dismissing the youngster, Bob takes Chad from a broken home under his wing. Chad grows up to be one of the best players in the country and receives a scholarship to play at Duke University.

In the meantime, Bob becomes a college basketball referee. Despite the birth of a child, his marriage begins to suffer as finances dwindle. When an opportunity arises for Bob to make extra money at the expense of fixing games, the allure of successfully cheating becomes too much for him to ignore. Chad as well as his mother’s boyfriend, an FBI agent, unknowingly become involved in an attempt to fix the national championship game.

Bob Knight, head basketball coach at Texas Tech University, calls Crooked Zebra “Entertaining, exciting and an easy read. This story may be closer to the truth than many people would like to believe.”

Weltlich attended Ohio State University and went on to enjoy a 29-year career as an NCAA Division I basketball coach. He ran the bench at six different schools, four as head coach, while compiling more than 300 wins. He is one of a handful of coaches to lead three different teams to the NCAA Tournament and was selected “Coach of the Year” in four different leagues. His teams have won numerous championships, and he was an assistant to Bob Knight during Indiana University’s 1975-76 championship team, the last college basketball team to go undefeated for the season. Weltlich is currently an analyst for ESPN. Crooked Zebra is his first novel.
