In fact, that eight glass measurement is based mostly on a 2,000 calorie diet with the rule being to drink one milliliter of water for every one calorie burned. Do the math and 2,000 milliliters is about eight cups of H2O. If a person is more active, he or she should up his or her water intake to make up for the water lost through sweat and heavy breathing (water vapor).

These are just some basic facts about hydration and heat, but here are some additional ways that one can make it easier to stay hydrated as warmer weather sets in:

-Make it a habit to drink before, during, and after activity. Staying well hydrated means that one can feel his or her best, no matter how he or she chooses to spend his or her time.

-Overhydration can be just as dangerous as dehydration. Athletes should try drinking sports drinks as well as water before, during, and after exercise to replenish electrolytes and sodium.
